"When I was a kid, my uncle, wh9 taught me how to fly, used to sit me on his lap and let me steer the plane. Slowly, I began gaining confidence to do it on my own." It was only natural that this coaching would lead to a career in aviation. At the age of 21, Bill joined the Air Force. There, he learned the intricacies of designing and building airplanes, which would lead him later to owning his own aircraft company. In 1982 Bill co-founded Mason-Heath, Inc. and began building airplanes for commercial and military use. So what Vol. 5 No. 6 June 29, 1998 c?uld be more exciting than building and flying airplanes? How about doing stunts in the movie? As an experienced pilot, Bill did aerobatics in several major motion pictures including "The Great Waldo Pepper" starring Robert Redford. Since then, Bill has promised his wife Nanette that he would stop doing such dangerous performances and concentrate on other more "down to earth" activities. From building and flying airplanes to cartooning to being in the movies, Bill Heath has led an adventurous and exciting life. This jovial guy, who has often been ca/,led ''the man of a thousand faces," says his biggest accomplishment has been his volunteer work, especially his work with children. In 1989, Bill joined the Districts as a Construction Inspector. He is a friendly, outgoing person who enjoys working with people. "I'm a people person and there are a lot of good people here at the Districts. My job takes me all over the plants making it easy for me to meet everyone." As a talented cartoonist who once worked for Disney, Bill has also made his mark on Districts' paper. "I can express myself better sometimes with my artwork than with words." Who can forget the popular "Royal Flush" t-shirt, the friendly "Pelican" please tum to page 2 • ' ' • ..... It's that time again. Your Employee Activity Committee is working hard to bring you the BEST District's Picnic ever! We have lots of events in store for this fun-filled day and, of course, we'll have the best food in town. We are searching for a unique name to give our little country town and need your help. This year's theme is "Our Country Ho-Down." So, put your creative thinking caps on and come up with a "town name" we can build around the theme. Submit your suggestion via e-mail or voice mail to Portia Mina by Friday, July 3. The committee will choose from the entries received and the creator of our town's name will win two (2) tickets to this year's Employee Picnic. Tickets will be available soon from your EAC representatives. Adult tickets will cost $5 each and kids 12 and under are $3 (2 and under are free). More details will be posted on the bulletin boards in July. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • C.to~ -5w~~ :> ~- The District will be taking part in an Ultra-Low Flush Toilet Exchange August 1and2. CTSI, the toilet contractor, will be setting up in the Plant 1 Administration parking lot on those days. The District is helping to underwrite the cost of each toilet installed in our service area as part of our commitment to water conservation. As a result of our efforts, a new ultra low flush toilet is only $20. This special price will be available to all residents who live in the OCSD service area. The postcard pictured above will be distributed at the District's booth at the O.C. Fair. The event will also be publicized with a flyer insert in the O.C. Register. The toilet exchange program is part of an ongoing effort by the Orange County Municipal Water District and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. CTSI will be on site August 15 and 16 from 9 am to 2 pm to recycle old toilets. Did you know that old toilets are ground-up and used as paving material on streets?! MPDES Permit Bash at Bolsa Chica Come to the Orange County Fair •• July 10·16 •• We're ready and in the Pink, with a few new things making their debut in the District's booth this year. The Confined Space Entry Display, a Fuzzy Filter Demo Unit and our very own Mascot team! Something totally new! The team consists of a specially designed costumed mascot, "Waterdrop," and his/her friend Operator (still yet to be named). The District's mascot team will entertain and teach kids what the District's does on "Kid's Days." We are still looking for some special volunteers to play these roles. It'll be a lot of fun, so sign up. On July 1at10-11:30 am in the Board Room, District's Booth Staffers are requested to attend a volunteer orientation meeting. At this meeting everyone will be receiving their shift schedules and their tickets and parking passes. A guest speaker from CTSI will be attending to tell staffers more about the "Great Toilet Exchange." A member of Division 420 will explain what Collections does and what the "Confined Space Entry" display represents. Jeff Brown, Div. 880, will talk about the Fuzzy Filter Unit. All volunteers who staff the booth during their non- working hours will receive one raffle ticket for every hour worked. We'll have many fabulous prizes that will be raffled off at the Post-Fair Party. Mark your calendars for 5:30 pm on July 28 for the Post-Fair Party at Chevy's. All volunteers who manned the District's booth will be treated to a free dinner. Please call Ingrid Hellebrand ext. 7115 or Suzanne Smith ext. 7123 with any questions. The Permit B-B-Q at Bolsa Chica State Beach was sensational. Everyone had a great time. We enjoyed 60 lbs. of tender barbecued chicken, 45 lbs. of incredible (cooked to perfection) barbecued salmon, a wide variety of delicious salads, and scrumptious desserts. The weather was beautiful, and in the ocean a pod of dolphins played in the ~ater close to shore. There was also a waterspout (a tornado over the ocean) at a di:>tanGe for our entertainment. Thank you, everyone, for your help in making this event such a success. A spe ial t/1 ks to r co l.f... P l n ·el
