Water Usage
• Chemical efficiency — Polymer make-down : High total dissolved
solids decreases polymer activity.
• Bearing Surface and Heat Exchanger Corrosion — High total
dissolved solids and chlorides can quickly corrode machined
surfaces.
• Biofouling prevention — Cooling water in heat exchangers :
Biofouling/plugging can occur with Plant Water due to biofilm buildup
• Health/safety — Fire water, eyewash , and aerosol regulations.

Areas of opportunity identified for city water reduction :
• P1 & P2 centrifuge facilities (polymer make-down and scrubbers
make-up water P1 )
• Irrigation at P1 and P2

• Currently polymer make-down uses city water
(P1 : 65 gpm, P2: 28 gpm)
• Polymer make-down testing with plant water
• Vendor jar testing confirmed comparable result with plant water
• Testing timeline:
• September 2020 - Piping modifications
• October 2020 - P1 testing
• Will also test reclaimed water as an alternative
• If the P1 test is proven effective, P2 make-down test will be conducted
Estimated Savings:
P1 : $15,000/month saving
P2 : $6,400/month saving
P1 & City Water Reduction Plan

Irrigation : Available Alternatives
✓ Replacing city-water pipes with reclaimed water pipes
✓ Drought tolerant landscape
✓ Smart landscape watering and leak detection
